Shells and Scripting Languages

Several shells and scripting languages are used, and each is identified at the time each hint and hack is discussed. This book uses a mix of different shells to show the versatility and uses of each. Keep in mind that not all hints or hacks work in all the shells available in each environment. I recommended that you read a shell programming book before using the shell programs here. The examples use the following shells and scripting languages:

• Bash
• sh
• csh
• ksh
• Perl
