Tested UNIX Flavors

You probably know the history of UNIX and that two main flavors were developed. There was the original by AT&T and the one from the University of California, Berkeley (BSD). Since then, there are well over 80 UNIX flavors. You can visit the UNIX Guru Universe on the World Wide Web for the most complete listing. All these 80+ flavors are derivatives of either the AT&T or the BSD version of UNIX. The hints and hacks discussed in the book have been tested on some of the top flavors that represent both the AT&T and the BSD version. Those flavors include

Throughout the book, unless there is something specific to a particular operating system, I will be referring to the AT&T or BSD flavors. The hints and hacks discussed in this book are generic to most systems. When they are not, I will note the difference.

If your flavor isn't listed, it doesn't mean that the hints and hacks don't work. Access to all 80+ flavors for testing was not available at the time this was written, but you will find the information still applies to you.
