Media and Communication laboratory (former NTUA Media Unit) is aiming in filling the gap between Media Technology and Communication Science. It is an innovative approach triggered from the existing need of studying the reciprocal (Cybernetic) interactions and consequences of information flow between the two mentioned domains. The main activities are the following:

Virtual Reality
Simulation of moving sound sources using the minimum number of loudspeakers. For the needs of this project, variable directivity arrays of speakers are used driven by special digital signal processors. Another research area is the simulation at home environment of the sound fields of large enclosures (auditoria), by transmitting to the user receiver-processor the eigenvalues of the simulated sound field.

TV-Radio Ratings
Development of innovative system for instant TV-Radio ratings and their analysis. Development of short/long term ratings prediction method. Development of method correlating social events and ratings. Development of method for rating transmitted advertisements.

Medical Applications
Development of diagnostic and tutoring multimedia systems in human and veterinary medicine. Development of digital auscultation system using multiple sensors with infra sound hearing capability.

Edge Technology Applications in Media
Improvement of existing media performance by using advanced technology. This activity includes multisound video, offering MIDI encoded multiple sound signals on the same sound track, personalisation of receiving (audio and/or video) equipment by programmable message filters.

Multimedia
Design of multimedia message forming techniques for maximum penetration. Design of metaphors. Study of multimedia production economics, pros and cons as well as cost comparison of digitally (computer assisted) produced multimedia seances with those produced by using analog means.

Intrasensory Transformations
Development of methods for signal transformation from one sense domain (e.g. touch) to another (e.g. light) in a way that the basic information and probably the symbolism is preserved.

Opinion Gathering and Analysis
Development of methods for opinion Polling using cheap technology and preserving the absolute privacy of the voter. Research concerning methods for educating individuals to active citizenship. Research for a reliable vote weighting method according to voter's involvement into the subject under vote, preserving the democracy principles.

Acoustics-Electroacoustics
Development of simulation method for sound fields developed in large rooms. Automatic sound equalisation using real time reverberation analysis and music as test signal.

New Media Technologies
Experimentation with Digital Audio Broadcasting. Research of new methods for wide screen and high definition TV productions. Personal advertisement. Radio Broadcasts of massive data with individual receivers.

Education
Impact of digitally produced multimedia lessons in education. Study of adversary redundancy in multimedia educational productions.
