9.9 Users Who Take Care of You

Some UNIX administrators will tell you that administration is an unappreciated field. In a 1998 job survey concerning the UNIX guru universe, administrators were asked how they felt about the users that they supported. The results only confirmed what I suspected all along. Administrators like working with their users and users are good to their administrators.

The old cliché that UNIX administrators are used and abused by their users may be a thing of the past. The survey revealed that 43 percent of the administrators surveyed actually received gifts from their users. The unbelievable gifts came in all forms. Here is a partial list of the most popular gifts in no specific order:

Although not every UNIX administrator receives gifts, and I think it will be a long time before we all get gifts, it is great to find out that administrators are actually appreciated by their users. We can only hope that more users wake up, smell the coffee, and understand the amount of work that is involved in supporting their environments.
