eBay Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips and Tools
David A. Karp
O'Reilly & Associates; ISBN: 0596005644

Continuing to add to their terrific hacks series, O'Reilly takes on everybody's favorite online bazaar. These days, eBay is a very complex beast and it can pay off - literally, in real cash - if you know its more obscure nooks and crannies. This book will certainly expose you to many of the less known aspects of eBay. It covers feedback, searching, bidding, selling, working with graphics, running a full blown business on eBay, and the more esoteric technology of the eBay programming interface. Pair this book up with one of our earlier recommendations, the bestselling " Starting an eBay Business for Dummies", and you can confidently try to supplement your income on the service.

Shadows Over Baker Street
Michael Reaves (Editor), John Pelan (Editor)
Del Rey; ISBN: 0345455282

You can sum up this collection of stories in one phrase: Sherlock Holmes meets Lovecraft. You've got to admit, it's a natural pairing. The goodness gets even better when you consider the quality of the authors who contribute stories to this collection: Neil Gaiman; Poppy Z. Brite; Richard Lupoff; Brian Stableford; Barbara Hambly; Steve Perry.... Even H.G. Wells makes an appearance, though as a character rather than author - so do Mycroft Holmes, Irene Adler, and, of course, Dr. Watson. The result is a collection of stories that ranges from horror to mystery to science fiction as it probes the murky boundaries of Lovecraftian madness - a very satisfying blend indeed. This volume successfully executes a neat literary conceit and is sure to be a favorite of fans of Holmes and Lovecraft alike.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico (Soundtrack)
Robert Rodriguez, Various Artists
Milan Records; ASIN: B0000BWVC5

Robert Rodriguez, who directed the "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" movie, began writing the soundtrack as he was writing the script. He had a few song selections already in mind, asked some of the actors - who happen to be fine musicians in their own right - to contribute material, and wrote the rest himself. The result is an absolutely mythic south-of-the-border soundtrack worthy of the great cult Westerns of the past. While Rodriguez himself does a credible job with his own symphonic pieces, you can't argue with his terrific selection of songs from artists like Brian Setzer, Juno Reactor, Manu Chao, and others. Actors Ruben Blades, Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and yes, even the versatile Johnny Depp also contributed music. It's a credit to Rodriguez's musical sensibilities that, despite being assembled from so many different contributors, the album is so thematically coherent. Sadly, the same can't be said for the movie, which is barely comprehensible, although not a total waste of time. The cinematography is beautiful, some of the action sequences are lots of fun, and we get another wonderfully weird performance from Johnny Depp. And, of course, the soundtrack is first rate. Trust us, you'll like it.

The Ethics of Memory
Avishai Margalit
Harvard Univ Pr; ISBN: 067400941X

Avishai Margalit asks a deceptively simple question: is there an ethics of memory? It's not hard to conclude that cultures have an ethical duty to remember. Remembering past injustice can lead to a social conscience, surely an ethically desirable outcome. Yet, sometimes forgetting can be equally important. At what point should we decide to forget the revengeful past in order to move on to a better future? Margalit's simple question may lead to a predictable conclusion, but the journey there is the reward of this book. Margalit reaches his conclusions by way of literature, myth, religion, and political thought. If there is one flaw in his musings, it is that he does not sufficiently cover non-Western thought on the subject. Beyond that, the book is a thoughtful and thought provoking essay on one of the key human mental faculties and how it fits into the complex world of ethics.
