  • Wind integration into Diesel grids: Development of an assessment tool.

The objective of the project is: To evaluate the fuel savings from the introduction of wind power in Greek Islands with diesel supplied grids, through the appfication of a Logistic Model (developed by Ratherford Appleton I..aboratory, UK).

To analyze all the probable control problems due to the integration of significant wind power into the power systems, with the use of a Dynamic Model (developed in NTUA).

The island of Hios was selected as a typical study case. The wind and power data measurements were performed by PPC-Direction of Renewable Energy Sources.

The most significant result of the study is that in medium size islands (peak demand up to 40 MW) with diesel power generation, high wind penetration levels can be achieved, of the order of 70% in power, resulting in fuel savings up to 38 % . Nevertheless, more research has to be carried out concerning the determination (by systematic measurements and field tests) of the impact of dispersed wind parks on the operation of the power system and the evaluation of the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of marginal wind variations.

The project is funded by EEC.

  • Development and implementation of an advanced control system for the optimal operation and management of medium size power systems with a large penetration from renewable power sources.

The objective of the project is to develop and implement an advanced supervisory and control system for the management of the power units (diesels, wind parks, photovoltaic plants etc.) and the non-priority loads. The project includes the development of specific algorithms and relevant software for wind and load forecasting and operational planning and the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques for the on-line assessment of the security and stability of the system. Islands in Greece, Portugal, France and UK. will be used as case studies. The control system will be implemented in Lemnos island.

There are not yet definite results.

The project is funded by EEC.
