In this project an ATM VP testbed will be established and used to conduct
broadband multiservice user experiments. The testbed s focal point is an
ATM digital cross-connect (DXC) node. This node can be managed by a
local terminal, or by the network management center. The local terminal
displays information as alphanumeric messages which lead to low
productivity of the operator and slow response. For this reason, NTUA has
designed and implemented a Graphical User Interface (GUl) for the control
of the cross-connect. This interface graphically represents the node s
configuration and structures operator-machine dialogue in windows.
Management commands available to the operator are grouped in pull-down
menus corresponding to the standard CCITT five management areas
(configuration, performance, accounting, security, maintenance). The
usability of the GUI has been evaluated for a small subset of the commands
and has proved that the GUI dramatically improves operator productivity and
satisfaction while reducing errors.
