Network management and optimal design laboratory (NETMODE)

The NETwork Management and Optimal Design Laboratory (NETMODE) at NTUA is actively involved in R and D programmes sponsored by Greek and European organizations. Its interests span areas of communication networks with emphasis on planning, design and management of distributed data communications (e.g. evolution planning towards high speed networks, interim communication solutions, models and requirements for services and infrastructure, methods for flow/congestion control in multimedia environments, asynchronous video transfer and traffic models). Its infrastructure includes a LAN with several PC's and UNIX workstations. It has an extended S/W library which includes CASE tools, packages for network management and network simulation, RDBMS's, object oriented as well as conventional programming languages and two open and user friendly applications developed at NETMODE: the Hermes Network Design (HND) optimization platform and the Cerberus Network Management System (CNMS) , which are used for experimental and educational purposes inside NTUA and on the international Internet to which all NETMODE systems are connected.

NETMODE is closely affiliated with the Institute for Communications and Computer Systems of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. In this capacity, it supports the University effort to establish state-of-the-art integrated voice and data networking in the NTUA campus, consisting of a distributed ISDN/PABX, a vast FDDI-Ethernet based computer network, an experimental ATM LAN and structured wiring within and inside buildings.
