ESF Meeting

The large amount of molecular-genetic data currently being produced on mammalian embryogenesis is hard to access and use and a system is now needed that allows all this data to be directly searched, collated and compared compared by every laboratory interested in mammalian development.

Major laboratories across Europe collaborate to produce a database and associate management system which links an anatomical atlas of mammalian development in graphical form with the patterns of gene expression in tissues. The mouse is the standard, and only, model for mammalian embryogenesis. The database will therefore include a 3-D atlas of mouse development together with data on gene expression and cell lineage. This system will facilitate the analysis of normal gene function and the characterization of mutant phenotypes at both the anatomical and molecular levels. These facilities are required by the field and will provide a standard format for accessing, publishing and comparing diverse molecular-genetic information.
